Conversion of External to Internal Users<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-how-cpi-consulting-resolved-the-issue\" data-level=\"3\">How CPI Consulting Resolved the Issue<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-outcome-and-best-practices\" data-level=\"3\">Outcome and Best Practices<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, we&#8217;ll address situations where this error occurs due to a mismatch between a user&#8217;s Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudproinc.com.au\/index.php\/category\/entra-id\/\">Entra ID<\/a> (formerly Azure AD) account and their associated SharePoint Online profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This issue usually surfaces with a typical error message indicating that the user doesn&#8217;t have permission to access their own OneDrive for Business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-cd8970da3ca39c3dd9286d54c834d45e\"><code>Access Denied\n&#91;masked_user] does not have permissions to access this resource.\n\nCorrelation ID: XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX\nDate and Time: &#91;Date and Time]\nUser: &#91;masked_user]\nIssue Type: User does not have permissions.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>This is perplexing for users and administrators alike, as permissions seem correctly assigned at a glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two common scenarios causing this mismatch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-user-account-restoration\">1. User Account Restoration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a user account is deleted\u2014intentionally or unintentionally\u2014and subsequently restored, Microsoft Entra ID assigns a new ID to the restored account. However, SharePoint Online continues to reference the old ID, causing an internal <a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/PillarCheckUserAccess\">mismatch<\/a>. Consequently, the user experiences the &#8220;Access Denied&#8221; error since SharePoint no longer recognizes the account based on its new Entra ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-conversion-of-external-to-internal-users\">2. Conversion of External to Internal Users<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar issue arises when an external user (guest user) is converted into an internal Entra ID user. Here, the external user&#8217;s original ID in SharePoint is mismatched with the new internal ID created during conversion, leading to access problems with their OneDrive for Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-cpi-consulting-resolved-the-issue\">How CPI Consulting Resolved the Issue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, CPI Consulting encountered exactly this scenario with a client. After analyzing the underlying cause, our team successfully rectified the issue through targeted adjustments in the SharePoint Online admin center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the high-level steps we undertook:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identify the Mismatch<\/strong> We first confirmed the user&#8217;s current Entra ID and compared it against their SharePoint profile. This allowed us to verify the ID mismatch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reset Permissions in SharePoint Online<\/strong> From the SharePoint Online admin center, under User Profile Management, we removed all user permissions for the impacted OneDrive account. This step re-synchronized the user&#8217;s current Entra ID with the corresponding SharePoint site.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-outcome-and-best-practices\">Outcome and Best Practices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following these steps, the user regained full access to their OneDrive for Business. To avoid such issues, we recommend closely monitoring account changes, especially restorations or user type conversions.
